My wrists splinted prior to the wheelchair to enable stretching by carers at night, and to decrease spasm. The driving of the electric chair caters for all of that now.

The rubber band control we designed at rehab gave me the freedom to drive the chair myself

When standing, there is 1m behind to consider. The chair is an extension of the body and we need to become accustomed (a bit like when wearing a backpack). Wheras this is different in the manual chair.

Interaction from OT & physio constantly pushing the boundaries. I have lost a lot of weight, especially stomach and thighs just from regular standing. This weight loss has continued on a regular basis with just the use of the wheelchair.

Experimenting with strapping my arm in. Which does not work as it relocates the shoulder position. The only way to address these problems is to gain more strength in the weaker areas.

Womad. Blending into the crowd. Much stronger and more confident and stood for 3 hrs in total over the afternoon. Did not take a carer to put my arm on for the first time. (my arm was raw afterwards and I was in agony but I suceeded).

After Womad I found a wriststrap to use to protect my arm and allow me to drive independently without needing carers to put my arm back on. Now I can drive on my own and be alone.

Back in the manual wheelchair for my biannual trip to Melbourne. The difference in my condition was a 50% improvement (mostly strength and flexibility) therefor reducing the amount of work the carers had to do.
